1.
Earth raised up her head From the darkness dread and drear, Her light fled, Stony, dread, And her locks covered with grey despair. Prisoned on watery shore, Starry jealousy does keep my den Cold and hoar; Weeping o’er, I hear the father of the ancient men. Selfish father of men! Cruel, jealous, selfish fear! Can delight, Chained in night, The virgins of youth and morning bear. Does spring hide its joy, When buds and blossoms grow? Does the sower Sow by night, Or the ploughman in darkness plough? Break this heavy chain, That does freeze my bones around! Selfish, vain, Eternal bane, That free love with bondage bound.
2.
One morning fair as I took the air Down by blackwater side 'twas gazing all al around me The Irish lad I spied All through the fore part of the night We lay in sport and play Till this young man arose and gathered his clothes Saying 'Fare thee well today That's not the promise that you gave to me When first you lay on my breast You could make me believe with your lying tongue That the sun rose in the West Well then go home to your father's garden Go home and weep your fill And think on your own misfortune That you 've brought with your want and will.
3.
Hear the voice of the Bard! Who Present, Past, & Future sees Whose ears have heard, The Holy Word, That walk'd among the ancient trees. Calling the lapsed Soul And weeping in the evening dew: That might controll, The starry pole; And fallen fallen light renew! O Earth O Earth return! Arise from out the dewy grass; Night is worn, And the morn Rises from the slumberous mass. Turn away no more: Why wilt thou turn away The starry floor The watry shore Is giv'n thee till the break of day.
4.
What's the life of a man any more than a leaf? A man has his seasons so why should we grieve? Although in his world we appear fine and gay, Like a leaf we must wither and soon fade away. And if you'd a-seen those trees just a few days ago How beautiful and green they all seemed to grow. But a frost came upon them and withered them all, And a storm came upon them and down they did fall. If you look in the churchyard, it's there you will see Those that have passed like a leaf from a tree. When age and affliction upon them did call, Like a leaf they did wither and down they did fall.
5.
There is a Void, deep inside, which if entered into Englobes itself & becomes a Womb, such was Albions Couch A pleasant Shadow of Repose calld Albions lovely Land His Sublime & Pathos become Two Rocks fixd in the Earth His Reason his Spectrous Power, covers them above Jerusalem his Emanation is a Stone laying beneath O behold the Vision of Albion Half Friendship is the bitterest Enmity
6.
Pity would be no more, If we did not make somebody Poor: And Mercy no more could be, If all were as happy as we; And mutual fear brings peace; Till the selfish loves increase. Then Cruelty knits a snare, And spreads his baits with care. He sits down with holy fears, And waters the ground with tears: Then Humility takes its root Underneath his foot. Soon spreads the dismal shade Of Mystery over his head; And the Catterpillar and Fly, Feed on the Mystery. And it bears the fruit of Deceit, Ruddy and sweet to eat; And the Raven his nest has made In its thickest shade. The Gods of the earth and sea Sought thro' Nature to find this Tree But their search was all in vain: There grows one in the Human Brain
